Echo and George Ezra - Shotgun
Echo is a 18 mins long short social realist/personal interest story.
A young girls receives a phone call delivering some tragic news but her unexpected reaction reveals there is more to this call than first appears.
Narrative/structure
The film is based around 3 different phone calls.
The first call positions the audience as an outside observer - this is done through the use of an extreme long shot. The genre of Social realism is conveyed through the use of the restricted color palette. The second phone call positions the audience cynically. This is the second time the audience has seen her scam. This scene was the most difficult to write for, according to director, as he didn't want to give away too much of the plot too soon.
Micro elements
Mostly desaturated color palette
no use of non-diegetic sound adds to realism
slow-motion
jump cuts
diegetic sounds of city adds to realism
Use of extreme long shots in beginning creates anticipation within audience
Use of blocking in scenes to create sense of distance between characters e.g. the girl and her brother are often separated for instance in one scene where a large telephone pole separates them in the frame
In another scene the brothers looking out the window instead of at his sister showing the distance between the two.
This distance between the characters is reinforced when the girl is outside playing with a lighter and the families inside. She is literally playing with fire.
Influences on my work
This film influenced my ideas for my short as I realize just how important it is to have enigma within your short. It is important of the audience learns more as a short progresses. This keeps the audience interested.
I also watched a music video that capture the audience's attention through the use of technical elements as you audience wonder how it was filmed. I've embedded the video below as well.

Would it be practical to film yours in the same way as the George Ezra video?
ReplyDeleteNo not really. I don't have access to the computer software and equipment that they used
