Operator

Operator is a BAFTA award winning short film. It is based upon a real 999 call. It was directed by CAROLINE BARTLEET.

Overall I liked the film as I felt it successfully created tension. This is down through a variety of microelements & macro elements. One technique used is progressively closer close ups of the operator which creates a feeling of claustrophobia. This is reinforced with the use of the sound of the call, which blocks out other environmental sounds. Narrative is also used to create tension through raising the stakes with the introduction of Jamie the callers son. The representation of the operator is also very modern, focusing on both her caring but also professional attitude.

Inspiration
In my short I hope to use sound as effectively as it used in this short - I feel that audience's  imagination of  what Jemma is going through is much worse than what could possibly be shown  - and the sound enables this. I also enjoyed the suggestion of events repeating themselves at the end of the film when the operator takes another call.
