Tight Jeans

Tight jeans is a short comedic film. It is based around the conversation between three friends waiting.

Narrative/structure
The short opens with booming hip-hop music which reinforces the suburban setting.  Close-ups are used to reinforce the market and urban setting. This is important as it creates expectations of a crime or social realism film, this creates a greater contrast later when it's revealed to be a humorous film.

Extreme close-ups of the black males wearing stereotypical clothing also adds to the contrast between social realism and the humour later when they talk about tight jeans. The performance of them moving their legs like children reinforces the humour and childishness of their conversation.

Jump cuts and crosscutting are used in this scene to show time passing. Two people playing football is crosscut with the men on the wall moving legs or playing with toothpicks. The people playing football are shown attacking each other. This violence further emphasises the expectation of a social realism film. However it also reflects the humour as through the use of an extreme long shot it appears similar to violence in films like "the dictator".
The camera tracks into the group of friends. As a group of friends discuss how long they have been waiting the camera continues tracking around the group. This creates a more dynamic scene.

The three men are represented similarly to the three men in "Do the Right Thing". These men have bold claims but is unlikely from the way they are presented to the audience that what they say is just posturing. They also don't appear have anywhere to go or anything to do that is important as although they complain, they're content to sit on the wall and wait.

The use of diagetic car sounds adds to the realistic atmosphere of the city.
A panning and tracking shot is used to follow the tight jeans as they walk past. This highlights the gaze of the three men. It also highlights to the audience the importance of these jeans. This is cut with a shot reaction shot between the jeans and the men. It is also the first time close ups have been used since the men began talking thus further emphasises how important the jeans are.

The conversation follows a three act structure. It begins with a discussion of penis size. It then moves on to white girls and whether they prefer them to black girls. The conversation moves on to why white girls prefer black men. The middleman then says the size of the penis is because of slavery. This is cut with reaction shots from the the other actors. This highlights the humorous nature of the conversation. The positioning of the actors creates a sense of disbelief between the characters as they outweigh him on either side. The conversation then moves on to how black people have populated the entire planet. This is important as it shows how the claims of the black men have become progressively more unbelievable and more comedic.
There is then a long shot this demonstration that this part of the conversation is over. This is reinforced when the fourth friend appears on balcony. The shore that ends a man wearing a tight T-shirt walks past and one asks how he can wear such a tight shirt. This creates a cyclical feel as the conversation has returned to the beginning.

How influence my film
I think the use of one location is interesting is a causes the audience to focus mostly on the conversation, as opposed to the setting. I feel the mise-en-scene also reflects this as it adds to the realism as opposed to distracting from it.
I think this has influenced my work as the director has used a situation that most of the audience will be able to relate to, sitting and talking with your friends.
