Slap

Slap is a short film where a teenage boxer must finally come to terms with his true nature and confront standards of masculinity. Narrative Linear Representation Deals with masculinity and femininity and labels in society. The main character is shown struggling with self identity - this is emphasised through ambiguity and enigma. The film causes the audience to try and label the character, however by the end of the film we realise that people don't have to fit into specific labels. As is longer able to use non stereotypical characters - creates a more interesting film Mise-en-scene Many stereotypical masculine posters and objects in background etc. This frames the main character and creates a contrast e.g. nuts magazine & makeup. Contrast between masculine body and feminine makeup. Social realism (?) Style - natural lighting 16 mm film - gritty not traditional Hollywood narrative structure Micro elements Tracking, rock music -> framed with n...

Operator

Operator is a BAFTA award winning short film. It is based upon a real 999 call.  It was directed by CAROLINE BARTLEET.  Overall I liked the film as I felt it successfully created tension. This is down through a variety of microelements & macro elements. One technique used is progressively closer close ups of the operator which creates a feeling of claustrophobia. This is reinforced with the use of the sound of the call, which blocks out other environmental sounds. Narrative is also used to create tension through raising the stakes with the introduction of Jamie the callers son. The representation of the operator is also very modern, focusing on both her caring but also professional attitude. Inspiration In my short I hope to use sound as effectively as it used in this short - I feel that audience's  imagination of  what Jemma is going through is much worse than what could possibly be shown  - and the sound enables this. I a...

Arrival

Image
The arrival is a short film directed by Daniel Montanarini. It was funded through kick starter. It is a monologue about the internal struggle of a women deciding whether to keep her baby or not. Representation This short has a stereotypical representation of women. Represents her as caring and mercurial. Micro elements Lighting - changes half way through - represents change in attitude Tracking Shot - all one take Shot on the Arri Amira with a Zeiss 32mm Ultra Prime Possible inspiration? Simple narrative & use of only a few actors creates a logistically simpler  short - instead focuses on inner emotions. Lighting used effectively & tracking I feel that although this type of short is easier and logistically more practical; I didn't find it as engaging or interesting as some of the other shorts that I've watched. This might be because personally I couldn't relate to the women or it could be to do with the lack of activity/action.

Narrative/structure interwoven narrative stabbing and boys eating in kebab shop payoff at end linking story to meat chopping at beginning of short micro elements diegetic sounds of knives - intensified low key lighting in dark extreme close up knives thriller/horror soundtrack slow motion smiling voice over narrating story music intensifies/is only time without narrating effectively reaching climax reach - sunnenly cuts out to men talking in shop creates humour Ending effective as don't know how much of story is joke as ending shot is kebab shop owner sharpening knife threatenlingy. influence on my work I would like to use some form of payoff/comedy at the end of my short

Echo and George Ezra - Shotgun

Image
Echo is a 18 mins long short social realist/personal interest story. A young girls receives a phone call delivering some tragic news but her unexpected reaction reveals there is more to this call than first appears. Narrative/structure The film is based around 3 different phone calls. The first call positions the audience as an outside observer - this is done through the use of an extreme long shot. The genre of Social realism is conveyed through the use of the restricted color palette. The second phone call positions the audience cynically. This is the second time the audience has seen her scam. This scene was the most difficult to write for, according to director, as he didn't want to give away too much of the plot too soon. Micro elements Mostly desaturated color palette no use of non-diegetic sound adds to realism slow-motion jump cuts diegetic sounds of city adds to realism Use of extreme long shots in beginning creates anticipation within audience Use of blo...

Tight Jeans

Image
Tight jeans is a short comedic film. It is based around the conversation between three friends waiting. Narrative/structure The short opens with booming hip-hop music which reinforces the suburban setting.  Close-ups are used to reinforce the market and urban setting. This is important as it creates expectations of a crime or social realism film, this creates a greater contrast later when it's revealed to be a humorous film. Extreme close-ups of the black males wearing stereotypical clothing also adds to the contrast between social realism and the humour later when they talk about tight jeans. The performance of them moving their legs like children reinforces the humour and childishness of their conversation.  Jump cuts and crosscutting are used in this scene to show time passing. Two people playing football is crosscut with the men on the wall moving legs or playing with toothpicks. The people playing football are shown attacking each other. This violence further empha...
